What Is Classical Conversations?

Classical Conversations supports homeschooling parents by cultivating the love of learning through a Christian worldview in fellowship with other families. Organizers believe there are three keys to a great education: classical, Christian, and Community.

CLASSICAL
The first key to a great education is that it is “classical.” By that we mean the classical model of education which has proven effective over time. This model has cultivated great leaders in the arts of freedom. Aristotle, Newton, C.S. Lewis and Thomas Jefferson are just a few examples of great thinkers who were educated classically.

A classical education is ideally suited to children’s natural learning style. The classical model divides the learning process into three stages: grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric. In the grammar stage, children devour facts. In the dialectic stage, children ask many questions as they sort and evaluate these facts. In the rhetoric stage, teenagers synthesize their knowledge and apply it. Learn more.

CHRISTIAN
From beginning to end, the Classical Conversations curriculum is founded on the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. Classical Conversations teaches that all subjects are not only interconnected but that God is the author and creator of each subject. Each subject informs us more about the true nature of God, and a better understanding of God informs us about each subject that is taught. Learn more.

COMMUNITY
Classical Conversations plants and supports local communities who meet once a week across the United States and in several other countries. Being part of a like-minded and committed community provides parents and students encouragement, fellowship, and accountability. To find a community near you click here.

PARENT TRAINING
Classical Conversations focuses on training parents to be great classical educators at home by hosting three-day summer conferences in many locations. These conferences are called Parent Practicums because they give parents practical training in difficult subjects like math, logic, and Latin. Conference speakers also model classical teaching methods, such as the art of asking questions and leading discussions. Parent Practicums are free and available to anyone interested in classical, Christian education. Parents who are willing to become tutors receive trainings during the afternoon sessions of the 3-day conference and receive additional on-line support throughout the year. Learn more.

You’re invited: 17th Annual SMA Angels Charity Ball, Nov. 15, Savannah

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

SMA Angels Charity Ball Savannah 2014The SMA Angels Charity Inc., a 100 percent volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a treatment or cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), is pleased to present the 17th Annual SMA Angels “High Hopes” Charity Ball on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 6 PM in Savannah.

Individual tickets are $80. Various sponsorship levels are available. All proceeds benefit the fight against Spinal Muscular Atrophy and help support local families.

The 17th Annual SMA Angels Charity Ball will take place at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront, 100 General McIntosh Blvd., where guests will enjoy an evening of dinner and dancing with live entertainment by the Swingin’ Medallions band, dinner music provided by Roger Widener and a silent and live auction with auctioneer Matt Mattingly.

The SMA Angels Charity was founded in 1999 by the friends and family of Cassie and Skylar Swanson, twin sisters who were diagnosed with the most severe form of SMA five months after birth in 1997, to help raise community awareness and money for research devoted to finding a cure or treatment for SMA.

Read about the amazing Richmond Hill family with twin daughters born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) by clicking here.

A devastating neuromuscular disease, SMA is the number one genetic killer of children under two. At present, there is no cure or treatment.

“Parents of children diagnosed with SMA are often told that their child will never sit, walk or stand and most likely die before the age of two,” said Becky West, a 16-year member of the SMA fundraising committee. “Families with SMA children will never have the opportunity to experience a normal child’s upbringing. SMA Angels Charity has worked tirelessly over the past 17 years to improve quality of care for these children and help them participate in many of life’s exciting experiences. They feel all children deserve quality care and quality of life.”

For more information about SMA Angels Charity and to order tickets, please visit www.smaangels.org, call (912) 727-4SMA or email smacharity@aol.com.

ABOUT SMA ANGELS CHARITY INC.
SMA Angels Charity is a 100% volunteer, non-profit charity that was inspired by two amazing little girls, Cassie and Skylar Swanson. They were born March 7, 1997 and, at five months, were diagnosed with the deadly disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). These beautiful identical twins inspired not only their family, but a community of friends. Determined that no parent should ever again hear, “Your child, will never sit, stand or walk and they will die before the age of two,” this charity began its fight against SMA. The organization helps provide support for the crucial research to find a cure or treatment for SMA; sponsors investigation into the best quality of care for children with SMA; provides medical equipment and supplies to families of children with SMA; and continues to work to spread awareness and education about this deadly disease. For more information, please visit www.smaangels.org, call (912) 727-4762 or email smacharity@aol.com.

Elsa isn’t on the ice in Savannah’s annual Disney on Ice show.

But Elsa certainly is in the audience. Lots of Elsas.

Oodles of little girls dressed up as Elsa at the skating spectacular that’s in Savannah this weekend for nine performances at the Savannah Civic Center.    Disney on Ice encourages kids attending the event to dress up as their favorite princesses & heroes.

We attended the packed opening night this week & loved seeing all the kids dressed as their favorite Disney characters.

Disney On Ice presents Treasure Trove  features all your Old School Disney favorites- Rapunzel, Alice & the Mad Hatter, Tinker Bell, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tiana, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Mulan, Snow White  and, my favorite, the Seven Dwarfs.

The crowd loved Simba, Nala, Pumbaa and Timon as they discovered the true meaning of the ‘Circle of Life.’

The show is about 1 hour & 45 minutes with a 20 minute intermission about 40 minutes in the performance.

Tickets for Disney On Ice presents Treasure Trove are available at the Savannah Civic Center Box Office here and Etix.com.

DoubleTree Hotel & Old Savannah Tours ghost trolley tour = Perfect Date Night or Girls’ Night Out

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

DoubleTree Savannah Deals

Spending an evening in Savannah’s historic district is always a treat.

But spending an evening in the historic district on a ghost trolley tour, followed by a night in a posh downtown hotel with views of the Savannah River & bridge, then waking to a breakfast that manages to be both decadent and healthy – well, that is downright divine.

We recently had the memorable experience of doing all that at DoubleTree by Hilton Savannah Historic District. We were there as part of a special free night for Savannah bloggers organized by DoubleTree & could not have had a better experience.

DoubleTree’s Spook, Slumber & Save package is the ideal date night staycation getaway for parents who really need a night off or for moms’ groups in need of a rockin’ moms’ night out. The hotel is right next to River Street & City Market.

DoubleTree Hotel Savannah Historic District Downtown Oh and did we mention, the ghost trolley tour does pick up and drop off at the hotel.

Think fun fall-themed drinks in DoubleTree’s hotel bar followed by truly spooky stories aboard the open-air Old Savannah Tours ghost trolley tour.  DoubleTree’s Spook, Slumber & Save package includes one tour ticket per person for the enticing two-hour ghost tour, overnight accommodations,  parking with complimentary valet service and a hot Southern breakfast each morning of your stay.

Our ghost tour guide – Savannah native Desiree – had a knack for sharing Savannah’s haunting lore in a way that made it both entertaining & educational. We crept down the stairs into the rum cellar of the Pirates’ House & really hoped for a ghost encounter while inside the “Infrared Room” at the Sorrel-Weed House, where you can watch eerie orbs on the four cameras located in the basement.

The ghost stories Desiree told & downtown haunted landmarks we visited were a welcome reminder of something all busy Savannah parents need to remember –  that we live in a remarkably rich city that is simply teeming with history and depth.

What better way to celebrate that than with a sweet Fall staycation in our very own downtown Savannah.

And with a warm DoubleTree by Hilton chocolate chip cookie!
